Luigi Marchesani was born in Vasto in 1802. Son of a notary, he graduated in medicine in Naples, where he practiced until 1837, distinguishing himself as a teacher and researcher, and publishing numerous essays.

In 1842, he founded the Vasto hospital, where he worked as surgeon and director.

Always passionate about homeland history, in 1841 Luigi Marchesani published the fundamental collection “History of Vasto, city in Apruzzo citeriore”, which served as the basis for all subsequent research on the city’s history.

After having directly carried out important archaeological excavations in the Roman necropolises around the historic city centre, he was entrusted with organizing the Archaeological Museum of Vasto, which opened its doors in 1849, the first in Abruzzo.

He worked in the service of citizens until his death in 1870, at the age of 68.
